While browsing in Bangkok's Siam Square, I came across a small candy shop selling these unusual sweets. While the rather hard 'caramels' aren't particularly tasty, I rather liked the vintage animal illustrations that adorned their wrappers. They seem to be inspired by scenes from a circus- aside from the badger with a handkerchief, which has left me rather puzzled.

These are wonderful designs.
Beautifully observed.
how cute. although i agree with you on the badger - whats that all about??
On a separate note, very exciting to see that you are thinking of moving to Vietnam. I look forward to stories and pictured of your adventures there...(or elsewhere? did you decide?)
I love the goat balancing on large vase of some sort. Why aren't there candies like this in the USA? I'm not a candy eater, but I'd definitely buy these for the wrappers.
I love them! Each animal is so wonderfully mid-gesture.
Have a great weekend!
Very nice. Good eye!
omg, i saw these in laos! i also picked some up for the illustrations, definitely not the taste.

I love these! They should be framed somehow.
Omigosh, I love these wrappers. I would not even eat the candy inside, just look at the bars in their pristine condition.
Maybe the badger is drying the dishes?
I'd definitely be stashing these for the wrappers, as I have with similar looking Russian sweets.
Nice!
The badger's probably attempting one of those 'cloth twirling' stunts - the kind where they make the cloth all flare out flat, and have to keep it that way. Here's a link to the kind of act: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTnN8OedYSw
